Summary:
We propose to conduct a study of the long-term behavior of the slot region of the Earth's trapped radiation belts using data primarily from the NOAA POES spacecraft. This effort will cover over two solar cycles worth of data, and will concentrate primarily on the frequency and intensity of transient radiation belts such as the one observed in March 1991. The study will also develop a statistical description of the energetic proton flux levels experienced in the region 2 < L < 4 over time. This study will contribute to LWS science goals by providing a statistical description of the climatology of the slot region, as well as a long-term data base on which theoretical studies of the acceleration and transport of charged particles within the magnetosphere can draw.Performance Year | Reference | Actions |
